World Digestive Health Day 2018 in Odisha, India

The World Digestive Health Day
(WDHD) 2018 ceremony was
organized jointly by the Kalinga
Gastroenterology Foundation (KGF)
of Odisha, the Department of Gastroenterology,
S.C.B. Medical College,
Cuttack and the Odisha Chapter of
Indian Society of Gastroenterology
(ISG). It was held at the Mayfair
Hotel in Bhubaneswar. The program
was attended by about 200 physicians,
internists and gastroenterologists of
the state. At the outset, Prof. Shivaram
Prasad Singh spoke about the
history of the World Gastroenterology
Organisation (WGO), and how the
birthday of WGO was being celebrated
aptly as the World Digestive
Health Day (WDHD). He also spoke
how this day was of special significance
to gastroenterology in Odisha,
because on this day was also founded
the Odisha chapter of the ISG, plus
the website for educating the people
in the native Odia language was also
launched on 19 May 2007
Prof. Singh explained the objectives
of WGO:
- To contribute on a global scale to
the study and progress of gastroenterology;
- To maintain active contact with all
organizations interested in gastroenterology
and allied fields;
- To encourage and support cooperative
research, particularly in
relation to the epidemiologic study
of gastrointestinal diseases;
- To consider the study of future
plans for the development of education
& training in gastroenterology.
He also spoke how the Kalinga
Gastroenterology Foundation played
an important role in observing
WDHD every year in Odisha since
2007. This was the twelfth consecutive
year that KGF was organizing
WDHD in Bhubaneswar. Prof. Singh
also read out the message from Dr.
Yun-Fan Liaw and Dr. Brian McMahon,
the Co-Chairs of WDHD 2018
culminating in the words: “Through
the WDHD 2018 campaign, the
WGO looks forward to helping to
provide a better understanding and
recognition of Viral Hepatitis, B and
C, as a global burden. Please join us
in ensuring its success.”
