Accurate grading and staging is of vital importance for any discipline, but especially for hepato-gastroenterology. It is essential for adequate diagnosis, for differentiation of diseases, for selection of appropriate therapy and for optimal overall patient care. Currently no synopsis exists of the most relevant grading and staging instruments in GI. This unmet need is especially significant for fellows in training, interested clinicians in practice and academicians, involved in teaching and education. The recently published compendium is a first attempt to provide a comprehensive collation of relevant grading and staging systems in gastroenterology.
After an exhaustive screening of related literature, a set of instruments were identified and grouped into three major domains: generic grading/staging instruments, organ/disease specific systems and disease-related quality-of-life instruments. Appropriate, explanatory comments were added to each section. However, no judgment of the overall quality, usefulness or validation of the various instruments is given, because proper comparative studies are not available, upon which to found any objective evidence-based recommendation. Instead, high-quality line drawings, endoscopic and histologic photographs are added to clarify or illustrate certain features. Finally, the exact literature reference, from which the grading and staging systems are extracted, are given for further reading or explanation.
This atlas can be used in different ways, especially as a collation of relevant GI-dedicated systems and references. The authors hope that their contribution will enable to further raise the overall performance in Gastroenterology and the standards in patient care and scientific endeavors.
