Sharjah Training Course
The first African-Middle East workshop entitled “Challenges and Solutions in Clinical Gastroenterology: a perspective from Africa an the Middle East” took place on December 8th and 9th, at the University of Sharjah under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al-Qasimi and in collaboration with the College of Medicine, University of Sharjah.
Fifty gastroenterologists, trainee gastroenterologists and gastrointestinal surgeons from eighteen countries across the Middle East and Africa joined international, regional and local UAE faculty in a unique, interactive programme which addressed common and important clinical issues in disease of the gastrointestinal tract, liver and pancreas, such as hepatitis C, pancreatitis and gastrointestinal bleeding.
It was a truly interactive experience with doctors from diverse regions of Africa and the Middle East exchanging problems and solutions to diseases that affect so many in the area.
The workshop was developed and presented by the World Gastroenterology Organsiation under the direction of its President, Professor Eamonn M M Quigley, from Ireland who stated “this was a highly successful programme and its success owes much to the excellence of the facilities, the outstanding input of the local faculty and the tremendous support obtained from the University of Sharjah; we hope that this represents an important first step towards the development, in collaboration with the World Organisation, of a state-of-the art training centre accessible to all involved in gastroenterology and the care of patients with digestive diseases in the region”.
