WGO Training Center in Ribeirão Preto, Brazil

Introduction:

Since the 1960’s the members of the Gastroenterology group of the Department of Medicine at the Medical School of Ribeirão Preto have been studying gastrointestinal motility, devoting their time to research, clinical application of digestive motility examinations and to the training of post-graduate students. On August 8, 2008, The WGO Training Center was inaugurated at the Medical School.

Main Objectives / Goals:

• The objectives of the Center are to perform digestive motility examinations, to organize and carry out research and to teach the techniques of motility examinations.

Facilities:

The Digestive Motility Center is located in the General Hospital of the Medical School of Ribeirão Preto, University of São Paulo. This is a large 700-bed tertiary care public hospital which attends a large population from the Ribeirão Preto area, state of São Paulo. It is a public hospital belonging to the Federal Health System (SUS), that does not charge the patients for medical services. The resources are drawn from the federal and state budgets. 

The Center is comprised of one large room in the hospital where esophageal and ano-rectal manometry are performed, and a room in the Nuclear Medicine Unit.

Equipment at the center includes:

• A continuous water perfusion manometric system from ALACER Biomedica (Brazil).
• A solid state-impedance system for esophageal manometry from Sandhill Scientific Manometry System (USA).
• A Nuclear Medicine instrument from Sopha Vision DST (Sopha Medical Vision America – USA)

Areas of Training:

• Esophageal Motility.
• Esophageal pH recording.
• Scintigraphic study of esophageal transit, gastric emptying, gastric contractions.
• Anorectal manometry
