WGO Practice Guideline - Treatment of Esophageal Varices
Title: Treatment of Esophageal Varices
Definitions
Esophageal varices are portosystemic collaterals, i.e. vascular channels that link the portal venous and the systemic venous circulation. They form with portal hypertension preferentially in the submucosa of the lower esophagus. Rupture and bleeding from esophageal varices is a major complication of portal hypertension and carries a high mortality. Variceal bleeding accounts for 10-30% of all cases of upper GI-bleeding.
