WGO Divisions - Digestive Surgery
Such have been the advances in the field of digestive surgery that, in many parts of the world, this discipline, formerly regarded as a component of “general” surgery has now evolved into several discrete sub-disciplines: foregut surgery, hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery, colorectal surgery and transplantation surgery. Each has witnessed the impact of laparoscopy which has, in turn, led to fundamental changes in the manner in which surgeons are trained.
Reflecting the close relationship and partnership that exists in many institutions between the digestive surgeon and the gastroenterologist in the management of digestive disorders, WGO advocates the incorporation of digestive surgery into its educational and training programs; indeed, surgical input to such programs as Train-the-Trainers has already ensured that all benefit from the experience of surgical trainers in the development of modern and effective approaches to instruction in clinical and procedural skills.
It is appropriate that the digestive surgeon and gastroenterologist of the future learn side-by-side of the range of digestive disorders which affect their community and of the diagnostic and therapeutic options which exist so that they can truly develop the tem approach that will ensure the optimal care of their patients.
