The WDHD 2018 program was
inaugurated by Prof. Subrat Kumar
Acharya, Pro Chancellor of KITTS
University, Bhubaneswar by lighting
the inaugural lamp, in keeping with
the Indian tradition. Prof. Acharya,
who was formerly President the
ISG, spoke about the importance of
organizing such programs and lauded
the efforts of the KGF for organizing
these events continuously for
over a decade. Dr. K. N. Panda, the
Secretary of the ISG Odisha Chapter
welcomed the delegates and thanked
Prof. Singh for consistently conducting
various educational programs in
the region for over two decades. This
was followed by a brief introduction
on the burden of viral hepatitis,
especially B and C, by the Guest of
Honor, Prof. Y. K. Chawla, Chairman
of Academics, KIIT University, Bhubaneswar
and Past President, Indian
National Association for Study of the
Liver (INASL).
A symposium entitled “Management
of Hepatitis B and C in India”
was the highlight of the WDHD
2018. The introductory lecture of
the symposium was delivered by Prof
C.E. Eapen, Professor and Head of
the Department of Gastrointestinal
Sciences, Christian Medical College
in Vellore. He spoke on the “Management
of Chronic Hepatitis B,”
and the various practical issues which
arise. He discussed various problems
of management including fulminant
hepatic failure due to HBV infection
during pregnancy, management of
needlestick injury, and management
of HBV reactivation during chemotherapy.
This was followed by an interactive
session on “Management of Chronic
Hepatitis C” moderated by Dr. Ashok
Choudhary from the Department of
Hepatology at the Institute of Liver
and Biliary Sciences (ILBS) in New
Delhi. He discussed with the young
gastroenterology residents the various
intricate scenarios associated with
management of Chronic Hepatitis C.
This was followed by a panel discussion
on “Management of Hepatitis B
and C” with the following panelists:
Prof. S.K. Acharya, Prof C.E. Eapen,
Dr. Ashok Choudhary and Prof. Y.
K. Chawla. The panel stressed the
need for developing our own strategies
for prevention and treatment of
chronic hepatitis B and C, keeping in
mind the resource constraints that the
health care delivery system of India
has to struggle with. There was a free
interaction on management issues between
the panelists and the delegates
attending the meeting.
The symposium ended with a vote
of thanks which was offered by Prof.
Manoj Kumar Sahu of SUM Hospital,
Bhubaneswar.
